What is the purpose of my life? This question goes through many individuals' minds around the world when reflecting on the life lived and imagining what the future will bring. This question can also be seen as scary when everyone knows how their ending goes. Death is the conclusion of life for the human race, it is inevitable and the absence of life. So, what is the purpose? What is the reason I am here, living on planet Earth? The answer to this question is one of the foundational pieces as to why I believe in the Lord and why I have faith in His plan for us.
The “answer” I will give is simple and broad; a foundation for thought and reflection. Our purpose in life is to live for others. We read in 1 Peter, “Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms.” {NIV 1 Peter 4:10}. The joy it brings when looking to the future of my life and seeing the amount of opportunity I have to serve. We are to utilize the gifts we were given by the Lord to show his love in our daily actions. A doctor will use his gift of understanding anatomy to help those who are sick. A construction worker builds homes from wood, metal and stone for families to take shelter in. This idea seems simple but living life for others may be hard to accomplish. The trait of selflessness doesn’t come easy, but can be learned and used to spread the light of God.
“In the same way, let your life shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your father in heaven.” {NIV Matthew 5:16}
Jesus was a light for many people in his fleshly time on Earth, helping people with what they needed whether that be healing them or just sharing a parable to ease another perspective in their minds. Jesus gave his life for others as stated in Mark, “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and give his life as a ransom for many” {NIV Mark 10:45}. I wish to walk like Jesus and to utilize my strengths to serve mankind, just like Jesus lived his life for others. Each person that walked on Earth was created on purpose, for a purpose. God does not do anything without having a reason. Find the reason God made you and use that gift as a light to serve his creations.
