I think the question, “who is God,” can seem very simple at first glance, but the more you think about it, the harder it becomes to answer, because there are so many ways to describe Him(all awesome and wonderful, of course). Before we talk more about who God is, we must first acknowledge that God exists, right? We read in Hebrews 11:6, “And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him.” So now that we acknowledge that God exists, let's figure out who He is.
I think it will be best to touch on a few key verses before we get into the biggest part of answering this question. First off, in John 17:3 we read, “And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent,” which tells us that God, is the “only true God,” who sent His Son Jesus to earth to save us. Second, in John 20:17 we see that God is the Father of Jesus, when we read, “Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God.” For our third explanation of God we go to 1 Corinthians 8:6, where Paul writes, “but to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in Him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by Him.” This verse tells us that we are all “of” God, and “by” Jesus - wait, wait, wait… what does that mean? Well, think of an architect and a builder, the architect designs the building and the builder builds it, you could say that the building is designed “of” the architect and built “by” the builder. So God is the architect, and His Son Jesus is the builder, which means that God is the one who designed you! I think that’s pretty cool.
To conclude our answer to this question, I think we need to touch on one of the most important things about God. Let’s read 1 John 4:7-8, which says, “Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.” Did you catch it? God is love! This means that everything God does for you and me and the whole word is done because He loves us. You don’t have to look far to find examples of this, just open up your Bible and start reading, if you look really hard you can see love in everything God does. Think of the most loving individual you’ve ever come across… If you called at 2am would they pick up? If you needed a shoulder to cry on would they be there for you? If you were really excited about something would they rejoice with you? If you did something wrong, and asked them for forgiveness, would they forgive you? Well if you know God, you know He is a yes to all these questions, because He loves all His creation, and 1 Corinthians 8:6 tells us that we are His creation. So next time you need a friend at 2am, a shoulder to cry on, a friend to rejoice with, or even forgiveness for something you did wrong, all you have to do is turn to God, because He loves you, that’s who He is.
